Each month we’ll interview a member of the Sine Fine Film company, asking the same or similar questions, and learn more about the actors and crew.

This month I’m interviewing Kate Weber who’s been with the company since the beginning in the summer of 1996.

Q: How did you get involved in SFF? (And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?)
A: Long answer: I’ve been friends with Yibble since we were in third grade, and through the years we’ve done a lot of things that, in retrospect, might have been a little out of the ordinary.  Things like starting a literary magazine, putting on a puppet show, dressing our toys as Greek gods, that sort of thing.  We were all drama geeks in high school, so acting in a movie wasn’t much of a stretch. And while the hours could get long and the weather was never friendly, it was always a lot of fun, and something I’m proud to have been a part of. Something I wish I’d gotten a chance to do more of when we were living in the same city.
Short answer: Yibble’s mah FWEND.

Q: What was your favorite part to play?

A: It was pretty great to play Ryaka in Pandora’s Box. Prior to that all my roles had been more or less distilled insanity.  It was nice to do some actual acting. (Yes, I count “psychotic bitch” as acting. Shut up.)

Q: What was your favorite filming day?

A: A lot of it’s kind of blurred together but I really liked some of the scenes in Destiny III out at the MacLeod farm, where Rachel Anderson and I just sort of sat around in the background and did whatever the hell we felt like. I was usually taking Rachel’s lead – she the one who came up with the Beans’n’Weenies song, for example.
Actually, it’s a toss-up, because Cursed Destiny of Pandora’s Gift Box was SO much fun as well.

Q: What was your least favorite filming day?

A: Gift Bearer: Time After Time, in Edwardian dress in triple-digit weather.  That kind of sucked.  I mean, it was still fun, but good lord I thought I was going to faint.

Q: What’s your dream role?
A: I’d love to be the conflicted villain who eventually makes good, or the reluctant hero with angst problems.  Having a love interest would be pretty fun too.  Never had one of those. (In a movie, that is.  I like to think my husband counts as my love interest in real life.)

Q: What’s your favorite production to watch?
A: Cursed Destiny, hands down, if only for Mike Steen.
Q: What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?
A: I still have the penguin from Cursed Destiny.  I’m not sure I had much else in the way of props.

Q: Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?  Who would you like to work with in the future?

A: Rachel Anderson and Jen Weber are always a joy.  I’d love to work more with them, and with Yibble (in an acting role, not just as director). I also thing it’s be fun to act opposite my sister.

Q: Sum up each production you’ve been in using only one word or short sentence.

A:
DESTINY – spontaneous

DESTINY II – flashback

DESTINY III – pirates!

FRUMPY GETS IT –
chaos

PERFECT COMBINATION – fridge

DESTINY: THE MINI-SERIES (1999) – editing

PANDORA’S BOX – killing

CURSED DESTINY OF PANDORA’S GIFT BOX – madness

QUATRAIN – unfinished?

TWISTED TALES: CINDERELLA (as writer) – whim

GIFT BEARER: TIME AFTER TIME – hot

FORTUNATE ONES: FOREVER – rope

FORTUNATE ONES: MAGIC-8 – cars

Q: Top 5 favorites: (not SFF related)
A:
Favorite Color
Uhhhhhh…honestly, I like blue and purple and green and many of the darker reds.  That’s over half the spectrum.  I’m not very good at this.
Favorite Movie or TV Show
If we’re talking movie I could watch the most times, then probably the original Clash of the Titans
Favorite Song or Band/Artist
 Binary Souls/Other Dimensions…but I might be biased.
Favorite Food or Drink
 PIZZA

Favorite Holiday
Probably Christmas.  Honestly, any day I’m not at work is pretty excellent.

Interview with Nina Samii February 11, 2013

Each month we’ll interview a member of the Sine Fine Film company, asking the same or similar questions, and learn more about the actors and crew.

This month I’m interviewing Nina Samii who’s been with the company since the summer of 1997.

Q:

How did you get involved in SFF? (And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?)

A: I got involved when I was in a play with Eleanore at Central High School and she was talking to someone else – Elizabeth Andrijasich – who was playing Paco the Taco and it sounded like so much fun, and so I begged Elea, I said “Please please! I’ll do anything! I could be anything! I could be—“ and then it just came to me “—I could be Nina the Fajita!”  I think you took pity on me, so I was lucky enough to get my first part because my name was Nina and it rhymes with Fajita and I got to be the sidekick of Paco the Taco.

Who doesn’t want to be a movie star – or feel like a movie star? And even though it isn’t a big Hollywood blockbuster, someone gives you a script and points a camera at you and you feel special.

Q: What was your favorite part to play?

A:

I would have to say Lily from the Dragon & The Unicorn – that’s the first one that comes to mind. I think it’s because the character I got to play the longest was Zarina and it was hard to be mean. I know there were some tender moments with that character but I think it was cool to be the hero and to play someone who was discovering something about herself and I think that’s what I like and I didn’t have to be mean to anybody, except the villain.

You know it’s so funny, I was literally just thinking about this yesterday.  I was driving home past Jen Weber’s house and it made me think of filming and for some reason that made me think about The Dragon and The Unicorn. I had this thought – would I rather play a villain or would I rather play the damsel-in-distress? As I was thinking about it I thought,  the villain takes more energy, and the villain is more complex… But now that you’re asking point blank I think I’d rather be the damsel-in-distress because it’s easier and because I’m lazy.

Q: What was your favorite filming day?

A:

Pandora’s Box, filming at Allerton Park and we were filming in the gardens and right off of the gardens was that field. I just remember it being a blast and it was so hard to stay in character that day because everybody was laughing, the weather was good, it was just a really good time and everyone was getting along – it was just a magical day. We got to frolic in the field. I think that would be my favorite day.

Q: What was your least favorite filming day?

A:

I remember one time we were filming at the MacLeods and it was cold – it was so cooold!  And there was this other time we were filming in the woods and Danny was there so it had to be Dragon and The Unicorn and I remember being cold – so very cold.  And then there was the Vigil – it was before you figured out how to make blood and so it was like beat juice and laundry detergent and you doused me in it – that was unpleasant.

There was a scene where Zarina was going crazy and I had to throw myself around in this little room in your basement – I think that was the hardest thing I ever had to do. It wasn’t like a bad day of filming, but it was definitely the hardest.

Q: What’s your dream role?

A:

I think anything that would require me to kick ass, like if I could be like in Mission Impossible or I could be an X-Man or something.  You would be like “Nina I need you to do this role, but you’re going to have to go through martial arts training for six solid months.” And I’d be like “Okay, Elea, I will do what ever you want me to do.” I think that would be really fun – where I got to like…kick butt.

So there’s that, but then the other part of it is that I’d like to be – I think maybe because of the weird life stage I’m in right now – that I could be a academic or someone who like decodes things or solving a mystery by using my smarts. I would wear glasses and I have to push them up with my index finger.  I’m like Violet in a Series of Unfortunate Events and I’m tying my hair back with a ribbon and pushing up my glasses like “We have to get to the bottom of this mystery!”  I want to play a smart person with glasses.
Or I could be like both – a smart, mystery-solving person who may or may not need to kick ass.

Q:

What’s your favorite production to watch?

A: I don’t know – can I say blooper reels? Because originally at the end you showed bloopers and it just reminds me of all the funny things that happened while filming.  Yeah, that or Destiny.  I know the least about Destiny, because I didn’t come in until late and I was a very small part of Destiny III, so I’d like to watch it because I don’t know a lot about it and it’s interesting to me.

Q:

What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?

A: Oh here it is – you ready? I’ve got it: my black boots, you gave me pair of cropped like sort of gray pants, and then I had this like Army, cropped jacket like thing – it was green.  I put that on and I felt like my character!  (Me” was that King of Elflin’s Daughter?) Yes! That’s it!  I didn’t really talk much in King of Elflin’s Daughter, so all I really had was that costume, but I liked it a lot.

Q:

Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?  Who would you like to work with in the future?

A: That’s a hard question.  Okay, favorite people to work with? Definitely Danny Skirvin, definitely Diana Neatrour, and Rachel Anderson.  I like working with Rachel and Danny cause they’re really goofy and they can lighten the mood and they’re really, really unique people – both of them.  They have a very entertaining sense of humor, very non-sequitur. I like working with Diana because she’s the same way, but she keeps it inside – she’s very subtle and I’m still so glad I got to film with her. I just like her as a person, I just like to be around her.

I’ve gotten a chance to work with Brittany Ann Whalen-Meyer, she was really fun and I’d like to work with her more.  I’d also like to work with obviously Annamarie, and obviously Jacob – they’re like the most talented people in the world, so wouldn’t want to work with them.  I really enjoyed being around Syndi Eller as well.  I think working with people is not just about how they perform and how they look but also just the kind of people they are, and that’s a really cool thing.  All of them are reasons that most of the people are just people you want to be with.

Q:

Sum up each production you’ve been in using only one word or short sentence.

DESTINY III – Fajita

DRAGON & UNICORN –  Necklace in my tea

KING OF ELFLIN’S DAUGHTER – Lip-syncing, and pretending to play a violin

PERFECT COMBINATION – Serious…

THE VIGIL – The raccoon skin cap, mornings, Ryan Segovich…I think that’s all to say about that.

PANDORA’S BOX – “Find the bomb and detonate it!”

EIDOLON – We filmed by a lake. It was cold.

GODDESS ANONYMOUS – Shh! and cupcake cleavage

Q:

Top 5 favorites: (not SFF related)

Favorite Color – Yellow
Favorite Movie or TV Show –Wayne’s World and The Office
Favorite Song or Band/Artist – Song? Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. Favorite band would be

The National and REM

This month I’m interviewing Syndi Eller who’s been with the company since the fall of 2002.

Q: How did you get involved in SFF? (And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?)

A: I was Pete Castel’s manager at McDonalds and he just randomly asked me if I wanted to do it and so he brought you down and introduced you to me. I think it was just a fit made in heaven.

(What makes me come back is) The people and fun, I mean torture is overrated.

Q: What was your favorite part to play?

A: Well since I’ve only played a few, I would say probably Atropos because I got to make the character mine.

Q: What was your favorite filming day?
A: My favorite filming day? C2! It was just fun, light and airy, like no real pressures for time, and I finally had more lines than just like two or three.  Or Goddess Anonymous, I don’t know-probably C2.
Q: What was your least favorite filming day?
A: Fort De Chartres. It was cold.
Q: What’s your dream role?
A: Well, I told you about my dream role. Writing a script about,- you know, the wish thing? (Fortunate Ones) – and how it would be cool to play a person that wished they were famous for singing and to be able to see how that goes.

Q: What’s your favorite production to watch?

A: Favorite one to watch? Probably Destiny – not Destiny, holy crap! – the Cursed Destiny of Pandora’s Gift Box.  I knew Destiny was in it.
Q: What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?
A: Well, I liked the dress – the burgundy dress I wore that in the dance scene, and I also like my coat. Well, my coat and sunglasses I guess, they’re a duel piece.

Q: Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?  Who would you like to work with in the future?
A: Favorite? Brittany, because she’s just hilarious, and when she goofs up it’s really funny.
There are four people (I want to work with more/in the future) – Nina, Annamarie, Russell, and Morgan.  Russell because, well because he’s Russell – he’s just amazing, and Morgan because I just absolutely love Morgan, she’s just so great – I want to pick her up and put her in my pocket. Nina because Goddess Anonymous was fantastic. And Annamarie – I’ve only worked with her once, but she’s just got that presence that brings greatness out in everybody I think.

Q: Sum up each production you’ve been in using only one word or short sentence.
DREAM CHASERS
I understand it but everyone else was confused. (There’s nothing coherent about it – if you’re trying to find coherency in Dream Chasers it’s just not gonna happen. It’s gonna confuse you even more, so if you just accept it for

what it is, it’s fantastic.)

Each month we’ll interview a member of the Sine Fine Film company, asking the same or similar questions, and learn more about the actors and crew.

This month I’m interviewing Morgan Thomas who’s been with the company since the spring of 2001.

Q: How did you get involved in SFF? (And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?)

A: How’d I get involved? That is a funny story. First day of college – SIU – I headed up to SPC-TV just to check it out. And there you were Yibble, sitting at the editing bay, making a credit page for The Curse – before even filming The Curse.  I came up and asked “whatcha doing?” and if I could help out, because I’d never done any TV work before.  I thought it would be neat and I wanted to get involved in something.

And I think it was a couple months later – I think Peter Normand popped up at the cafeteria and told me that you’re filming in the woods behind Faner, and if I hurry up I can help. So I run over there and we film the infamous “flying sorcerer” scene (well, he wasn’t filmed, but he did fly).  And I think it was the following weekend or something, I forget how far down the road it was.

So I showed up at the student center at the ass-crack of dawn to help behind the scenes and here comes Peter Normand, with this grin that frightened me terribly, and says “you’re gonna be a star!” And I said, “I’m gonna be a what?”

Here I am, you know, not dressed up at all for a part, and I’m replacing the role for Maria – which was fun… I couldn’t read in the car because of motion sickness to even know what the hell was going on in the script. I sped read on set trying to figure out what the hell the character is about – “Quick! What’s your motivation? Um..I’m a bitch? Okay go with it!”

It was fun!  Maybe I’m masochistic or something, I don’t know, but it’s an awesome, creative outlet to keep me from going completely bonkers. And it’s an excuse to get together with friends that you hadn’t seen in forever.

Q: What was your favorite part to play?

A: Oh geez…oh boy. So many to choose from. It’s a tie between Maria and Minerva really.  Minerva because I could just be a spaz and it was okay, and Maria just because of how long I’ve played Maria.  Minerva – she was just fun to portray, I know I could of done it better but…you know.

Q: What was your favorite filming day?

A: Technically it wasn’t a filming day, but we were on film and I think that would probably be when all of the cast and crew were heading to the Parthenon road trip, I think that was the Parthenon road trip, maybe the Champaign road trip – I know it was a road trip! We were spazzy as all get out that night, just hyperactive and I think there was a seesaw involved.  That was just a day that everyone was just nuts, and it was fun.

Q: What was your least favorite filming day?

A: The day I had a somewhat mental crack – the last day of shooting for The Gift Bearer (season 1).  That should have been a real big hint that something was wrong, but it actually took a few more years before I went to see a doctor.  Yeah, the day I scared the crap out of Adele.

There were too many directors on set going in too many directions and people were wanting to do their own thing and not really cooperating on the outcome. “I wanna try this.” “No, let’s do this”. I think that’s when we were having issues with some of the actors too that day.  We were having drama non-stop and I finally had a little bit of a dissociative break, cause there was so much stress going on.

Q: What’s your dream role?

A: Wow…geez.  What can I play, hmm….?  I sort of got to play a sassy vamp as an actual vampire – I never got to play a sassy vamp until then.  I’ve never done a full on sexy role, I don’t think – like an intentional one.  I’ve done a silly one, and the vampire one.  And I like detectives.  I’m not sure how that would combine though…

Q: What’s your favorite production to watch?

A: I have not seen Perfect Combination, I’ve seen snippets of it but I’ve never seen the whole thing all the way through, so I’d like to see that.  I’ve got some of the Gift Bearer discs you’ve given me and some other stuff.  I haven’t seen the final stuff from the summer shoot.  Favorite to watch…god, I gotta narrow it down.  I like the fairy tale series – Twisted Tales – I do like watching that.

Q: What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?

A: Probably Sherman (the Gift Bearer statue). Yup.
Berry and me – we kinda had a bonding.

I remember the – I don’t know if it’s the can-can costume or what it would be called.  I wore it for Gift Bearer during a montage and it was too tight, and I think I stretched it out a little bit.  But I think that was one that I couldn’t get off after I got it on.  You know, the red one?  I couldn’t get it back off!

Oh and that evil skirt at Fort De Chartres – it was too long and I was wearing shoes that were not period and I kept tripping over it. Like it would slide a certain way because of the material it was made of and then it just made me go flip!

Q: Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?  Who would you like to work with in the future?

A: Oh…that’s another toughie.  I’ve got to narrow it down. Russell should be a given – I miss working with him.   I guess it’s a tie between Russ and Bryan on the boys side.

Trying to narrow it down on the girl’s side…  Well, I wish I could have worked with Michelle a little bit more.  It felt natural working with both of them.  Working with them things just…bounced.

With Russ and I it really did feel like he was a brother, so when we were being goofy or batting lines back and forth between each other in a scene it was just natural.  And the creepy incest scene really did feel creepy.

With Shelly it was the same, just kinda natural.  She could deliver a line and how natural she could just…you know, just portray the character.  It set a standard that I tried to keep up with.

Q: Sum up each production you’ve been in using only one word or short sentence.

This month I’m interviewing James McKinley who’s been with the company since the spring of 2001.

Q: How did you get involved in SFF? (And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?)

A: LOL. I love torture. Just Kidding. I was watching Pandora’s Box on SPC-TV at SIUC and was like, I would like to meet the person behind this. Turns out I had a film class with you and after becoming a member of SPC-TV, I became friends with you and helped on an episode and that turned into cameos and co-starring parts. Plus, I loved being apart of something I enjoyed and hanging out with you.

Q: What was your favorite part to play?

A: Each one was fun to play but of course I would have to say Skyler Jackson because I got to dig my teeth into a character and get into his head. Plus it was fun to co-create him with you.

Q: What was your favorite filming day?

A: It is a tie between the day we filmed for the Giftbearer carriage kidnapping scene and evening Brittany directed the “Who You Drugged Us” walking through doorways scene. The carriage scene brought most of the cast together, which was fun and I got be in a scene with the main cast. It was the first time I felt apart of the magic that is the Gift Bearer.
The Eidolon scene was a long day of filming and by the time we got to that scene,we were exhausted. The more we tried to get through the scene, the funnier it got and we were slap happy. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so much fun.
Q: What was your least favorite filming day?

A: I don’t think I have a specific one. They were all good. I think the least fun was when we were tired and frustrated and trying to not snap at each other which wasn’t that much.
Q: What’s your dream role?

A: I would love to play a gay character who is in depth and kind of like me. Identifies with the bear community and is trying to be apart of the world. Make it better for himself and others. I would also love to direct and produce movies. I have a few ideas for TV shows and Movies.
Q: What’s your favorite production to watch?

A: I really enjoy watching Eidolon because it brings back so many memories of hanging out with you guys and goofing off and also creating a really special show. The story was compelling and complex and the acting was great. Plus, it brought the Champaign actors together with the SIUC actors.

Q: What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?

A: I loved the pants I wore in the Gift Bearer scene because I felt so Regal but I would have to say my Eraserhead T-Shirt because I love that movie and it is the closest to what I wear normally.

Q: Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?  Who would you like to work with in the future?

A: Wow. That’s a hard one because I always wanted to work with Virgina McCreary ever since seeing Pandora’s Box and got to in Eidolon, which I loved
It’s always awesome to work with Brittany and Morgan because we’re close friends, have lots of fun, and it would be great to be in another production with them again.

Each month we’ll interview a member of the Sine Fine Film company, asking the same or similar questions, and learn more about the actors and crew. This month I’m interviewing Edward Stasheff who’s been with the company from the beginning in 1996.

Q: How did you get involved in SFF?  And what possessed you to keep coming back for more torture?

A: You’re my sister. And um…you’re my sister?
Q: What was your favorite part to play?
A: Cordero because I got to look all badass and I had an eye patch that switched sides.
Q: What was your favorite filming day?
A: There really isn’t one that stands out more than the others.  I remember the days that were really rough but the fun days sort of blur together.  But, I guess the day we filmed the big dance number for King of Elflin’s Daughter stands out because it was really fun, and there was a rainbow in the sky.  Great weather, beautiful sunset and it was just really fun.
Q:  What was your least favorite filming day?
A:  Oh wow…um…the really late one in Mind Games when we had a big fight and you fired me.  It left the worst taste in my mouth, so to speak.
Q: What is your dream role?
A: To be Jaba the Slut – be fat and fun and have hot chicks sitting in my lap.  Or maybe write another script.
Q: What’s your favorite production to watch?
A: The Dragon & The Unicorn because it was well written – very mythic – and it was one of the most coherent scripts for that time.  The flashbacks/time-travel sequences worked well.  Annamarie did a great job as the evil chick and it was just a lot of fun to watch.
Q: What’s your favorite costume, accessory, or prop?
A:  My favorite costume was Cordero’s outfit.  My least favorite was the Ali-Jinjil outfit because I kept tripping over the damn thing!
My favorite prop was the six feet tall golden sword in King of Elflin’s Daughter and the poison bottle in Pandora’s Box because I had so much fun with it. My least favorite prop was the eye patch I wore as Cordero because I couldn’t remember which eye I put it over.

Q: Who’s your favorite actor co-star/actor you’ve worked with?
A: As actor – Tanino as Esteban because he’s hilarious and Annamarie in the King of Elf because we had lots of fun doing the “Shakespeare” version of a scene.
As a director – Chris Lamb was great to work with in Mind Games and Jacob MacLeod in Quatrain – he came up with a lot of really funny ideas.  Overall the three psi-squad actors were really great to work with as a group because they took direction well and play off each other well.  They understood the characters and worked as a unit.
Q: What was it like writing and directing Mind Games?
A: Hummbling.  It was fun though and we managed to pull off some really neat shots, We got to film in the Planetarium and press a lot of buttons.  There was the kiddie-Car-of-Death – that was fun.  Also, that’s when I realized the importance of sound design – there were lines you just couldn’t hear.Boom mics might actually be helpful.
As for writing Mind Games, I’d written the script before for another project and rewrote it as a separate movie but for a long time I didn’t have an end for it.  It wasn’t done and I having the actors read it and Annamarie saying “No! Where’s the rest?!?”
Q: What was it like writing and directing for Quatrain?
A: Writing was fun – trying to come up with something that could work any number of ways. I knew what I wanted the twist to be but it had to be vauge enough to work for other people and situations, so it was very challenge.
What I remember most about directing was having to hurry up and film before we lost the light while shooting the scenes in the back of my truck.
Q: Sum up each production you’ve been in using only one word or short sentence.
A:
 DESTINY:

Favorite Color – Blue
Favorite Movie or TV Show – Babylon 5
Favorite Song or Band/Artist – Enigma
Favorite Food or Drink – Anything that comes out of my smoker (well, almost)
Favorite Holiday – Not sure I have a favorite,  If I had to pick one it would be my birthday because that’s when I get to do my smoke-a-thon.  So I guess Smoke-a-thon Party day is my favorite.
